Best Plants for an Office Without Windows
Like so many people in Philadelphia, you might be someone who spends the vast majority of your time in an office. For many, they’re grateful for the opportunity to work in an office environment. COVID-19 showed all of us what our true preference is, whether that’s working from home, at the office or a hybrid approach. But not everyone working in an office has the luxury of a corner suite. In an urban environment like Philadelphia, working touches of greenery into your workspace are crucial for satisfaction. How can you incorporate nature into your space to make it more comfortable? What plants work best with little to no sunlight?
ZZ Plant
The ZZ plant features shiny, bright green leaves and thick stems, and it typically doesn't bring pests with it. If you have a windowless office space, keep it in any indirect lighting you can get. Be sure to allow the soil to dry out completely in between waterings. You'll find in the winter when your ZZ plant is experiencing less sunlight, watering will become less frequent as well. Watering for the ZZ plant typically sits around every 2-3 weeks. Some things to look for: if your ZZ plant begins to wilt or wrinkle, you're not watering it enough. If it begins to yellow, you're watering it too much.
Snake Plant
The Snake Plant is remarkably resilient and laid back. Snake plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight, typically great for an office environment. Be careful not to overwater this one to avoid root rot. Each plant varies based on differing circumstances, but you likely won't need to water your snake plant more than every 2 weeks. Snake plants are rewarding, strong, and edgy. We love the look a Snake plant brings to a modern, corporate space.
Air Plant
Air plants are an easy and excellent addition to any windowless room. They’re typically quite small, easy to store on a desk, and are fed almost completely from the air. The only maintenance you’ll need to remember is to let this soak in some water once a week. This could be for around an hour, depending on the size and preferences of your air plant.
Aloe Vera
Very low maintenance and highly usable, we believe Aloe Vera is essential for any home or office. As far as care goes, just keep it indirect light and water it every few weeks or when the soil feels bone dry. Don’t forget to use clippings to ease burns or cuts, or just as a moisturizer. If you have a successful Aloe Vera plant, it certainly won't be your last. One plant will create plenty of "pups" that can be repotted and given their own chance to grow.
